MTA Subway Sketch Series #2

Sketches of people on the train

Does something look familiar? Is it the woman in the hood perhaps? Yep, I used her for the piece that I did last week. Well that week I was focusing more on hair styles. I know that long straight hair is used quite often, but sometimes I like to draw how actual people wear their hair. It says a lot about them and their day to day lives. I do have some newer sketches, but they were mostly me trying to study this awesome book I came across and practicing some extreme perspective. I would like to tell you about this book I've been studying from. Maybe soon....I'm not making any promises.

Woman in Blue

While I was coloring the above image I drew of this woman on the train I thought it would be nice to give it a watercolor background. I found one that I really liked from here: Lost & Taken. Just slapping it on the background didn't work so I found a way to incorporate the texture with the background a little more. Pleased with the results I posted it here.

Completed w/ a red Prismacolor colored pencil and Photoshop.

MTA Subway Sketch Series #1

What better way to pass the time on a long train than to draw all of the passengers on it? While long train rides do take a good portion of my day...about 3 hours to be exact I find that time goes a lot faster when I've found a model to draw from. I sit (or stand) with my sketchbook in hand and just doodle away at the people I see around. My attempt to be discreet has been failing me more and more as of late unfortunately.  It ends up with both my subject and I averting our eyes from each other's stares. Take the bald head gentlemen in the image. He was standing somewhere else completely when he noticed me. I looked the other way. Then when I looked back again he was looking to his right and then back at me when he noticed me staring again. I try not to laugh or smile, but it's hard to resist. Eventually the gentleman left when I then looked for another subject to draw.

Normally, people don't mind when they are being drawn. Some people do ask to see and I don't have a problem with that at all. I also get into interesting conversations with people. For example, just yesterday someone told me that I had a future with the CIA apparently. Go figure.

Laughing Friends Sketch WIP

This is something I'm currently working on at the moment. I just felt like drawing some random people having a good time with each other.
