It's Misty Copeland and Brooklyn Mack as Odette and Prince Siegfried from their Swan Lake performance with the Washington Ballet. The background took way considerably less time than the rest of it did, but by the time I got to it was determined to get this piece finished.

I took a lesson from reflecting from the fabric folds post I made and listed almost every brush I used. It made it much easier to then go back and to retrieve whatever brush I used. Also, next time I can always refer to it for the future. Next time I am going to practice using the 'glazing technique' more to see if it can cut down on time even though I really love to pick and choose my colors... My favorite part was capturing Brooklyn's skin tone and all the lights that were reflected in it.

Completed in Clip Studio Paint.
Y.Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01178627885881251290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8194352493899881267.post-60633045439520362062023-03-13T23:57:00.002-07:002023-03-13T23:57:43.865-07:00Fashion Fabric and Fold Studies
Fabric folds are a daily struggle. Even if I understand the basics and that some things are consistent no matter the fabric type, it's still something I have problems with. I pulled out my brush pen and went to work and without fail...that awkwardness that comes with having to stare at someone for a bit as you draw them made it's return. You would think that I would be used to this by now, but alas...I am not. I managed to get this much down he exited the train. Some figures had to be reworked and a lot of reference had to be searched for everyone's outfits and looks, but overall I was pretty happy with the direction the piece was going in. It's very exciting to see where the the artwork will evolve and end up even though I know I am the one working on it from start to finish! I also had to make sure that there was room for text and all the information that needs to be placed on the cover so all of the important parts of the illustration needs to be as centered as possible! They will be celebrating their one year anniversary.

It was an honor to be invited to participate in the show, but at the same time, it's a bit nerve wracking since I have to decide what kind of piece I wanted to include in it, too. I was a little hesitant about using it, because...well...I do end up making a lot of changes as well as other things. It is an unabashed celebration of sexual desire and a mournful lament of fleeting romance. Y. Sanders’s illustrations reflect both of these characteristics. There are close-ups of mouths on breasts, fingertips playfully bitten, bodies embraced, tongues awaiting touch—and yet there is an ache that hovers over the joyful bodily pleasure, a recognition that this ecstasy, emotional and physical, will end.

You can read the review in its entirety at Tasteful Rude.

Y.Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01178627885881251290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8194352493899881267.post-80263313698647667152021-03-24T09:17:00.008-07:002021-06-23T14:26:05.570-07:00Embodied Anthology from A Wave Blue World

A Wave Blue World will be releasing an anthology entitled:
Embodied: An Intersectional Comics Poetry Anthology.

was an interesting challenge, because poetry is already so rich with imagery
that can be interpreted in so many ways. Venus’s poem was chock full of beautiful
imagery and metaphors so I wanted to work on something that would complement
it. Wendy and Tyler were a blast to work with and were very helpful.

William's Last Words from Red Stylo Media's 27 Club comic anthology. Here's a little write up about it:

For William, music is an escape from a life he wants to forget. But he soon learns that you can’t escape your true nature—especially when the demons chasing you come from within.
Ellen Goodlett and Y. Sanders will get under your skin with “William’s Last Words,” inspired by Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers.

This is the second page for the comic: 'William's Last Words,' inspired by Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers) that I'm working on with Ellen Goodlett for Red Stylo Media's 27 Club anthology. The Kickstarter campaign for it is here: Red Stylo Media's 27 Club Anthology Kickstarter Campaign. There's only three days left and there are still some reward tiers left. One is mine. I will draw you or anyone else into this comic. There are three pages for those who choose this reward to be featured in. Again, there are only 3 days left.

If you can't contribute to the campaign, it's ok! You can still check out Red Stylo's Facebook page.

Just another day on the train.

Sometimes, you ride the train and think to yourself, at 8:30am: I just want to do a small comic of this today. It'll be quick; shouldn't take too long. Then you start penciling it when you get home. As you are erasing your pencil marks you think: It would be best if I don't get too fussy. Just draw it and be done with it.

Now you're inking. You get lost in the mark making and realize that you need to finish this soon.

Well, it's time to scan. Looking at on the computer screen you think: Maybe I should change that. About 20 redraws in you force yourself to move on to colors. You are trying to come up with a color scheme, making sure that your values are contrasting.

Then comes the big question: Should I shade/render it?

STOP!

You just remembered that you were going to keep this flat, no shading. Good, you just saved yourself another hour or 2, because you have other work to do tonight. You need to go to bed anyways. Eyelids are weights. Decision making abilities are almost at a crawl. It's already 4am. Work is in 5 hours.

I have to letter this...

The grim realization wakes you up, giving you your second wind. You look through old files to find fonts and word balloons. One of your fonts is missing. Upon locating it you abandon it. Doesn't quite match the comic anyways. This new one does. Now it's done...

...or so you thought, because you need something more to it. Then you look up a technique you saw employed on something that looked cool and now it's time to try it for yourself. Sometime later you come up with something that looks ok. It's time to post it. Ah...it's fuzzy...can't read it. Time to re-size again. It's 5:30 am...about 2 hours until you need to get up. But whatever, that's fine.

At least the comic is done.Y.Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01178627885881251290noreply@blogger.com0
